Barrett Akpokabayen has a bachelors degree in Fine Art with his major in graphic design has always had a love and passion for photography. A chance meeting with renowned photographer Don Barber led to new recognitions for Barrett that realistic photography was truly a means of creative expression. That with a deep understanding of light and the lens, there was no limit to the possibilities in photography.
Skill, study, experience, passion and creativity all converged into one powerful focal point, and Barrett Akpokabayen Studio was born. The precarious balance between photography, art and design (graphic, web and animation), which many search for and so few ever achieve, suddenly became Barrett’s reality. For Barrett, “my design and photography has fused into a unified form of expose.”
He became a Senior Lecturer in 2000 at the prestigious Yaba College of Technology where he lectured in Graphics, Illustration, Computer Design and Photography up till 2008. In 2004, He started up his own private Photography Studio where he specializes in Glamour Photography, Advertising Photography and Art Photography. Since then he has been facilitator instructor in numerous workshops and seminars the Harmattan Workshop series and the University of Lagos, Creativity Workshop Nov 2004 just to mention a few. As a professional photographer he has done works for Aitel, Etisalat, Globacom, Cadbury, Pepsi and Access Bank.
He won ModeMen award for photographer of the year 2010. He is committed to promoting the development of Art and photography in Nigeria and within the African continent as a whole. Barrett is dedicated to training the next generation of professionals, with a belief the photography can be a strong tool for social engineering. And with improvement in the quality of works photography can also add to the national growth bringing in the much needed foriegn exchange necessary for a national developement. Barrett Aphotography
